Andreas Krebs has been on hunger strike since 29.01.2024. His demands seem simple – an end to his mail censorship and the delivery of the prisoner info and the Rote Hilfe magazine. Newspapers that can be bought at newsstands in Berlin are not allowed to be read in Tegel Prison.
After 30 days of hunger strike, the prison management informed Andreas in writing on 27.02.24 that he would receive the newspapers under certain conditions. This means that the newspapers must remain in his cell and articles can be censored on a random basis. As this was Andreas’ most important demand, he announced that evening that he would end the hunger strike.
However, on 29.02.24 he received two confirmations that items had been confiscated. The current issue of the Rote Hilfe newspaper, the prisoner info, a postcard with a political imprint and a stamp were confiscated.
Andreas then immediately resumed his hunger strike!
This behavior by Tegel Prison is disrespectful and scandalous. Prisoners are being psychologically beaten down by power games.
We demand that the mail and newspapers be handed over to Andreas Krebs and an end to the harassment.
We also call on everyone to contact the Senator for Justice by post, e-mail, fax or telephone and to clarify these events.
