Parents’ letter from the accused persons in the Budapest complex!

No Extradition to Hungary!

At the beginning of February 2023, there were clashes in Budapest around the so-called “Day of Honor”, where thousands of neo-Nazis gather every year.

We are the parents of the young people accused of assaulting neo-Nazis and causing bodily harm in Budapest in February. Our children are wanted by European arrest warrant in this connection. Two of the accused have already been in custody in Hungary for almost a year. In Germany, one of the accused was recently arrested and has been in custody since then. She and the other suspects are facing extradition to Hungary.

In the event of a conviction in Hungary, the defendants can expect an unreasonably high sentence compared to Germany. The Hungarian public prosecutor’s office is currently demanding up to 16 years in prison for one of the people detained there. The wanted persons are facing up to 24 years in prison.

The prison conditions in Hungary are inhumane. For example, one of the detainees was not allowed to have any contact with her relatives for 6 months. She reports being locked up for 23 hours a day in a 3.5m2 cell, interrogations without a defense lawyer or interpreter. She also describes malnutrition and catastrophic hygiene conditions. The cell is inadequately ventilated in summer and partially unheated in winter. It is infested with bedbugs, mice and cockroaches. Shackles are used when walking outside the cell, and a leash was used when walking into the hearing room.

Such prison conditions are commonplace in Hungary. In 2022, the EU froze billions in payments to Hungary because the country is not complying with agreed rule of law reforms and the independence of the judicial system is not guaranteed. The EU Parliament is currently taking legal action against some of these funds. In 2018, the Federal Constitutional Court overturned two extradition orders due to conditions that are incompatible with German law.

We are going public to prevent extraditions to Hungary. The conditions of detention there are unacceptable and do not meet the minimum standards of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights. A trial in accordance with the rule of law is not to be expected. There is a risk of serious psychological and physical harm if the detainee is detained and sentenced in Hungary. The conditions of detention and expected sentences are excessive and inappropriate.

  • We demand an independent and constitutional trial in Germany.
  • We oppose reporting that degenerates into smear campaigns that criminalize our children in a populist manner.
  • The presumption of innocence applies until a legally binding verdict has been reached.

We are very afraid and worried about our children.

They must not be extradited to Hungary!
