On Friday, June 21, 2024, Benni was released from pre-trial detention. The arrest warrant against him was lifted by the Leipzig Regional Court. Previously, on June 11, 2024, charges were filed against Benni by the Leipzig public prosecutor’s office.
Last June 2023, he is said to have thrown two incendiary devices at closed police units in the context of the Day X protests around the pronouncement of the verdict of the Antifa Ost trial. He had been in custody since January of this year. The public prosecutor’s office accuses him, among other things, of two counts of attempted murder. Parallel to the indictment, his prison conditions were massively tightened.
After this 180-degree turn from the stricter prison conditions under Paragraph 119 and the charge of homicide to the lifting of the arrest warrant, Benni is now free. After almost six months of imprisonment, those around him were able to receive him outside the prison. We and many others are full of joy to finally see our companion, friend and comrade-in-arms outside the prison and court walls again, not only to hear his voice on the phone or to be able to read his thoughts and reflections in letters with a time delay.
The Regional Court obviously did not follow the line of the public prosecutor’s office with the lifting of the arrest warrant. A decision on the admission of the indictment is still pending.
We continue to stand firmly by our companion’s side and will support him in the upcoming process. For us, the massive state action against Benni up to the time of the indictment is emblematic of the wave of repression of recent years, which is directed against large parts of the Left Movement in Leipzig and beyond. Our solidarity also goes to the many other victims of state persecution in connection with the protests that took place after the verdict was announced in the Antifa Ost trial.
Keep up to date and continue to organize solidarity for Benni and all those who are still in prison!
