Maja has now been in custody in Dresden prison for three months. Maja was arrested on the basis of a German arrest warrant. The arrest is connected to the investigations into various clashes with neo-Nazis surrounding the “Day of Honor” in Budapest in 2023. The Hungarian authorities have also issued a European arrest warrant, which is why extradition proceedings are underway to decide whether this will be granted.
The situation in pre-trial detention is more restricted than the general penal system. In Maja’s case, there are also weekly cell searches, monitoring of all mail by the public prosecutor’s office and monitoring of visits by the criminal police. But that was not enough. Maja spent almost a month and a half in solitary confinement. The reason appears to be more daring. An alleged secret handover of a note and a supposedly dangerous object in Maja’s cell led to solitary confinement. Maja’s letters were taken away from her at the time and all contact was forbidden, but over time this was relaxed so that visits were only possible through a glass wall. Fortunately, this harassment has been over since the beginning of March.
Maja is settling into everyday life in prison and is doing well under the circumstances. Maja is able to take advantage of various offers in the prison and is committed to starting an apprenticeship.
While Italy has decided against Gabri’s extradition, Maja still has to wait for the German authorities’ decision. We must clearly prevent an extradition to Hungary, an authoritarian state that supports neo-Nazis with the expectation of inhumane prison conditions and completely disproportionate punishments. Therefore, support the #NoExtradition campaign by all means.
In Dresden, there are monthly rallies at the prison to support the demands against extradition!
Maja is super grateful for all the support and sometimes a bit overwhelmed with all the mail. There is not enough time to answer everyone immediately. So bear with us a little. But many thanks to everyone who writes and shows solidarity.
Here is a short greeting from Maja from March 18, the day of political prisoners:
Hello, dear ones,
I would like to send you warm greetings on Political Prisoners’ Day. My name is Maja and I have been in pre-trial detention for three months and, in addition to several years in prison, I am threatened with extradition to Hungary. I am accused of attacking neo-Nazis.
I would like to thank everyone who has supported me from the bottom of my heart. The letters, postcards, visits and solidarity give me strength and courage and they move me a lot, especially during my one and a half months of isolation. I also send my regards to all those affected by repression and those in prison.
A huge thank you to everyone!
Maja
