Prison is based on the system of punishment. This means that social problems are not negotiated, but locked away. Terms like re-socialization become a farce when we look at the conditions in prisons. The social isolation from friends, family and society is an aspect of everyday life in prison. There are few communication channels and hardly any opportunities to enter into exchange outside the prison walls.
Add to this the pandemic that has been aggravating social isolation since March 2020. Visits are limited, sometimes only possible behind partition walls and with a mask, telephone calls are incredibly expensive and digital communication options such as Skype calls are only possible to a limited extent.
Writing letters is therefore also in the 21st century, where the majority of our society here almost exclusively communicates digitally, a vital possibility of exchange.
Letters bring variety to the grey everyday life in prison, enable conversations, social interaction and are often an anchor for people in prison to get through the dreary life inside.
Therefore we invite you on Friday, October 29th, 2021, 5 p.m. to the Malobeo for Solidaritea – the letter writing café, to write letters to people in prison together.
There will be tea and cake!
